Frequently Asked Questions
What are meetings typically like?
At each meeting, a company representative will give a presentation while members enjoy a snack. They typically give background on their organization, professional journey, and discuss opportunities they have on internships and co-ops. SWE Officers share section updates and any opportunities presented to the organization.
What is SWE National Conference Like?
The SWE National Conference is the largest conference and career fair for women in science and technology. Conference consists of workshops and seminars, panels hosted by industry professionals, and a career fair with over 300 companies. SWE members will take 2 to 3 days off school to travel to and attend.
What are the benefits of joining SWE?
SWE members get unique networking experiences talking one-on-one with professionals in their field. They also find out firsthand about internship and professional development opportunities.
Who is eligible to join SWE?
Any STEM major is welcome to join. The organization is also not limited to solely women, although the membership must be more than half female.
How is SWE different from WiSE?
SWE (Society of Women Engineers) is a student-led division of a national organization whereas WiSE (Women in Science and Engineering) is a program run by the University. WiSE focuses mainly on retention of women in engineering, while SWE provides more professional development opportunities. SWE membership does not have to stop after college graduation because women are encouraged to stay involved throughout their entire engineering career. However, because SWE and WiSE both aim to promote women in engineering through similar missions, many of our members are involved with both!
